I'm a subscriber to ADVFN.com. In fact, as a beta tester I get the premium
bulletin board for free.

It's a financial website, so the reason for a lot of the posting is
discussing which shares are going to rise and which ones are going to fall.
Because it's a paid for site, the users tend to be more serious
(independent) share traders than the posters on The Motley Fool (another
great forum. They now let their members set up their own bulletin boards on
their specialist interests).

ADVFN now has lots of non-stock posts. An invite to a Christmas dinner
issued yesterday now has over 70 people signed up, and debates are raging
over fuel blockades, "Does anyone like spicy food?" and so on...

Part of the appeal of these sites is that they arrange social functions for
their members, so that many of the regular posters know each other. This
has turned the site into a community of people of all ages, and from all
over the country who share an interest and know each other.

It's so much of a community that when one of the better known members had a
road accident last year, he was inundated with messages of support via the
board.

& when I did a sponsored walk earlier this year and posted details I
received over 500 in pledges, many from people I'd never met (though to be
fair I did ask that all cqs were made payable to Save The Children, not me).
