A Gogglebox portrait made an unofficial guest appearance at one of Britain's most prestigious art galleries yesterday.



The picture of Steph and Dom from the hit Channel 4 TV series Gogglebox was spotted on public displayed in the National Portrait Gallery.



The 7ft wide life sized portrait depicted 'the posh couple' sipping champagne while sitting on a sofa, was brought into the gallery under the noses of security staff.



It was spotted in the popular contemporary gallery next to a portrait of Sir Paul McCartney by artist Sam Walsh.

The venue's first floor contemporary gallery displays artists and sitters from 1960 to the present day.



The Gogglebox portrait was in good company as the gallery features works by celebrated artists Andy Warhol and David Hockney with sitters including film stars Michael Caine and Liz Taylor and Royalty such as Queen Elizabeth and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.



The National Portrait Gallery is also currently displaying a landmark retrospective exhibition of David Bailey.  Bailey has captured many of the world's most famous  actors, musicians, models and models.



Exactly how the image arrived in the Gallery remains a mystery, but it was pulled off ahead of  the much anticipated return of Gogglebox to our TV screens this Friday.



Life sized portraits of the Goggleboxers were also spotted resting in other locations across the capital from  Trafalgar Square to Abbey Road and on the London underground.

Gogglebox Background:



The latest instalment of Channel 4's award winning series, Gogglebox, returns to Channel 4 in a new prime time slot of Friday 9pm.



Now in its third series Gogglebox is back with the same adored and highly-opinionated British households, as well as a few new additions. The loveable Leon and June, Steph and Dom the posh couple who like a tipple, hairdressers Christopher and Stephen, and Brixton's own Sandy and Sandra will all once again share their opinions with the nation as to what's good and bad about the week's television.



Each episode is filmed over seven days, covering that week's TV and news highlights. From each household, Gogglebox will capture their instant reactions, love/hate relationships and fierce discussions on the best and worst television shows of the past week - all from the comfort of their own homes.



>From Saturday night entertainment juggernauts to the week's big soap storylines, from hard hitting documentary series to gritty drama, the Gogglebox households offer sharp, insightful, passionate and sometimes emotional critiques of the week's popular and topical TV shows, sparking debates and giving the audience the chance to share those 'we said that!' moments. Their reviews could also be interrupted by breaking news stories and controversial TV events - subjects the outspoken households won't be shying away from.



The programmes the viewers discuss in the first episode include: The Oscars, Strippers, The Taste and Saturday Night Takeaway

Background to Steph and Dom



Steph (47) and Dom (49) from Sandwich in Kent.  They own and run a high-end bed & breakfast business from their Grade 1 listed house in Kent, which has hosted royalty and celebrities alike. Steph previously worked for NATO and the European Commission and Dom used to run the family steel business. Most evenings, they crack open the drinks cabinet and settle down to watch their favourite TV shows with Gigi their beloved sausage dog. They met on a blind date and have been married for sixteen years.
