Digital Mission Blog
The Digital Mission series is run by Chinwag to support UK-based digital companies expand into new markets and attract overseas investment.
SXSW Interactive: Networking with an International Twist
Everyone knows that there is no such thing as a free lunch. Or breakfast. Or drinks...
That is, unless you're in Austin for South by South West (SXSW). The Chinwag team will be heading out to Austin along with UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) and 31 of the UK's leading digital companies on the UKTI Mission to SXSW.
Alongside the 200+ conference sessions, the trade show (where the Brits have a stand so big, it's been dubbed the British aisle - geddit?) and dozens of evening events, there's more than a handful with an international flavour.
For those heading in to Austin from abroad, it's a great chance to meet fellow travellers, and the Americans interested in making connections overseas. Here's a few we're involved with (and if you know of more, please feel free to add them in the comments):
Chinwag's Global Grill @ SXSW
Sun 13th March 2011, 5:00pm - 8:00pm
East Tent, Brush Square Park
Free (RSVP & SXSW Badge Required)
When in Texas, do as the Texans do...
Join us for Chinwag's Global Grill, an official SXSW party, for all the international folks heading to Austin for South by South West (SXSW). What better way to celebrate than with an opportunity to network with fellow out-of-towners and our American friends with some fine local BBQ and some cold beverages?
Supported by UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), swing by Brush Square Park, grab some BBQ and a beer, and discover some of the opportunities beyond your own borders.
The Great British Booze-up
Mon 14th March 2011, 6:00pm - 9:00pm
Shakespeare's Pub, 314 East 6th Street
Free (More Info)
The best party of SXSW returns! Expect much merriment courtesy of your British cousins, CitySocialising, Headscape, Pusher, The Team, Lanyrd Inc, Chinwag, and of course, Clearleft.
Naturally, we're already looking forward to the festivities. We’ve put some money behind the bar, and can't wait to share fun times and frosty beverages with you lovely, thirsty conference goers. Though be sure to get there early as numbers are limited.
Free booze, good music and even better company... what more could you ask for? We'll see you there!
Great British Breakfast: SXSWi
Tue 15th March 2011, 10:00am - 12:00pm
Cedar Street Courtyard, 208 West 4th Street
Free (RSVP & SXSW Badge Required)
Chinwag and UK Trade & Investment are hosting a networking event with thebest and brightest from the UK digital media industry along with US investors and international media.
This is a great opportunity to join the top innovative digital entrepreneurs and companies from the UK, including the 31 companies on the UKTI Mission to SXSWi. Come and meet the Brit’s and talk about all things digital.
Of course alongside the networking we will be serving a full fry up, Brit style. We don’t want to make your mouth water but...bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes, toast and most importantly Heinz Baked Beans!
Once you have signed up, you can pick up your ticket from the UKTI stand on the SXSWi expo floor.

TSB Launches £200,000 IC tomorrow Scheme for Digital Media Entrepreneurs
A new initiative announced by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB), sees the launch of IC tomorrow, a platform for content owners and app developers to test drive ideas and applications with a closed group of consumers (sign-up here) using content from major content owners including Sony Music, Getty Images and Crytek.
The platform will host 20 consumer trials focused on the creative industries including music, TV/film and publishing, with a total fund of £200,000 up for grabs to support six month-long trials on the platform. Entrepreneurs are being encouraged to use the platform which will also include mentoring, as well as up to £10,000 per project funding and access to premium content.
Dr Nick Appleyard, Head of Digital at the Technology Strategy Board, said “IC tomorrow offers an unrivalled opportunity to trial consumer applications and business models and we’re now looking for the brightest digital entrepreneurs and organisations to submit their applications. By breaking down the challenges associated with delivering content rich applications to the market, IC tomorrow hopes to ensure the UK continues to be a leader in technology innovation.”
Applications are now open, but as with all government cash there are some hoops to jump through. A thorough reading of the IC tomorrow Digital Innovation contest brief is highly recommended (it's embedded below).
The closing date for entries is noon 11th March 2011 - and the TSB are very strict when it comes to timings, so don't be late - and require a simple business case and supporting video. Approximately 40 applications will be chosen to go through to the final face-to-face panel session at the end of March.
To apply for the trial and the funding, you'll need to:
- Register on the TSB's __connect network or Login if you're already a member
- Join the IC tomorrow Digital Innovation Contest group
- Fill out the application form, once completed it can't be changed (read the guidance notes)
