Sahlan,

Same colors here they've always been: pink and lavender on dark blue
background (WinNT, Netscape). If I may make one comment on that subject
though--I think the text is too fancy and takes up too much space on the
pages. It would look better and be easier to read, imho, if you used
that fancy font more sparingly and had a small simple text for most of
the content--it's nice, there just shouldn't be so much of it.

The music played just fine today (interesting way to combine Flash and
QT on a page w/MIDI music)--it's a wonderful accompaniment to your
photos, which are fabulous. I love the silhouettes on the hill and the
boy in the tree. Any luck getting the music on Mac/Netscape yet?

Regards,
Helen

Hi helen,

first the MIDI hang-up. Yes! thank God... i delved into the html4 book
tonight & found a ref to the autostart tag... somehow IE doesn't need it &
NS doesn't on WIN, & dreamweaver doesn't insert it, but when i put it in,
the sound played in netscape on my mac. Whoopee! however, no control bar
shows up in the window, then mac users have the control strip to turn off
the music if they don't like tarrega or rodrigo or beethoven.... nothing is
ever exactly perfect in this goofy, bleeding edge tech world

also Pierre Schwob who has the MIDI Archives sent me the html for centering
tables which i also put into the sections where the movies don't size to
fit, and it worked too.... so tonight i really did my first bit of html
programming

& thank you for your kind words about my pictures... and i guess i have to
say that photography is really a gift from God, for my best work has always
been spontaneous... it just happens when i chance to be in the right place
at the right time, often without intention, or on something ordered, if i
set up a situation, then let it happen... or with the boy in the tree...
that was taken many years ago when i'd just come out of doing in-camera
movie multiple exposures & experimented with the same in stills, not knowing
exactly what image i was exposing over another

my design work on the other hand is something i've learned & though it's
usually easy for me to shoot & get satisfactory results, design is often
grueling and torturous, yet it seems that i need to do both

yes, thank you also for your take on the type.... it flashed (not a pun!) on
me sometime a few days ago that maybe i was seeing too much of it, a little
bothersome

so tonight i also managed to go in & change the long text page in the photos
to the same font as the book title

and after i have a nap (gee, it's 5 am already) i'm going to tackle the
design section.... use avant garde, the face that lubalin designed, i think,
which is fitting, and it will be more business-like (though with taste)
which is appropriate for that section, even though there's a couple of
screens that look so neat right now

the zapf chancery isn't exactly a serifed face, but its surely not gothic, &
i can't recall when i ever saw two serifed faces work ok together... though
i did use americana on the photos

i'm not sure about wanting it too small though.... and that maybe because i
work at 1600 x 1200 on a 21 inch... i'm always seeing this barely readable
itsy-bitsy type that everyone seems so fond of... at the same time hand
kerning in flash is very tedious, about on a level with that of some
computer type programs of 5 years ago... take out a space between two
letters and spaces around other letters in the word change... not nearly as
sophisticated as illustrator or photoshop... & though one can import
straight text as editable from word, i read, i think text imported from
illustrator would become an object & uneditable, but i'm not sure... i
wonder if a lot of web designers use small type because they're so pressed
for space, or because it would really look lousy blown-up

see, told you it's torturous.... anyway, again i truly appreciate your
input, for it will improve the site....

and any other criticisms you have, please pass them on

now i'd better to rest before i go into lock up

kind regards,

sahlan
