If you want to just encode a bunch of characters, and want to see the escape characters for them, you can use this handy Flash movie called "The Encoder".

It's just a simple Flash form that sends data to an ASP page, which then throws the contents of the movie, encoded, back at you in a new browser window. Crude, yet helpful.
