A kiosk is a computer usually enclosed in a fancy case that can be connected
to the Internet or runs a standalone program... an example I was involved in
was the local government did a Property Tax Assessment and used the Internet
to distribute the information. We developed a version to go in the kiosk
which was distributed in malls across the city so that people who didn't
have access to the Internet could still check the Assessment.

www.webopedia.com defines kiosk as this:

"A booth providing a computer-related service, such as an Automated Teller
Machine (ATM). Another type of Kiosk offers tourist information. Kiosks
providing Internet access are expected to be popular in the near future.

A kiosk requires a simple user interface that can be used without training
or documentation, and the hardware must be rugged and capable of operating
unattended for long periods of time. Touch screens can provide some of these
features because they enable a user to enter and display information on the
same device and eliminate the need for keyboards, which are prone to break."
