Just a couple of features that will establish a clear difference, of
course many of us are awaiting Generator 2, impatiently I may add.
Generator 1 features (condensed and abridged):
Database integration : You can use any JDBC/ODBC compliant database and
query it directly using the SET SQL template command.
On demand graphic generation : Using the Generator Dynamic Graphics
server.
Extensibility : Being Java compatible you can create custom Java classes
that act as data sources that can then be associated with a Generator
template.
Replacing movie clips and graphic symbols : Using the replace template
movie clips and graphic symbols can be replaced in Flash template
allowing for run time generation of content.
Inserting movie clips and graphic symbols : Using the Insert template
command variables can control the insertion of movie clips and graphic
symbols.
Etc.. Etc.. This list could go on and on a good source of information is
the Macromedia web site.
And before you say that Flash 4 can do all that, think again ! Flash 4
does indeed allow for much but what you deliver to the client browser
has to include all possibilities. Flash 4 isn't template based and it's
content isn't created on demand. It's pre created, pre defined even if
it allows for countless options. Flash 4 can also receive external data
and can be used as a front end to access data from a database but only
via other levels of software not directly.
I hope this helps clear the confusion.
