That's right. Older players will ignore things in the file they don't
understand. It's like HTML and the browsers that way.
If one of your customers says "Hey, I can't hear sound in your Flash 4
file!" then the usual cause is that they have a Flash 3 Player.
Recap:
If you're in Flash 4, then consider whether a particular site would benefit
from larger installed base, or larger feature set. This could help
determine whether you save out in SWF3 or SWF4 format. You can always test
a SWF3 file in a Flash 4 Player, because modern features will already have
been stripped out.
Most of us will likely go right to the Flash 4 feature set, because the
Flash 4 Player is so fast to download and install. If you have a
particularly conservative audience then you might wish to defer on adding
new features for a bit. Depends on who you're talking to out there.
There's a JavaScript routine available for determining player version...
search Flash technotes with keyword "Flash 4". (You can also attempt to set
variables in the first frame and attempt to branch if you can retrieve
their value... a Flash 3 Player will ignore variables and so will continue
playing the original movie.)
For other new stuff, please consider:
-- Want to add pause/rewind/play? Take advantage of the Shockwave 7.02
Remote Control... just change your HTML so that the swTarget attribute has
a value of TRUE.
-- Want people to see your work offline? Again, the Shockwave 7.02 Remote
Control can help... set the saveable attribute to TRUE.
-- Please make sure your Flash work is listed in the Shockwave Search
Engine... even in this first week there have been over a hundred thousand
hits generated by this new referral service.
-- If you'll be using these new features, then consider asking your
visitors to tell their friends about your site... they can do so by
clicking the "Send" button in the Shockwave Remote Control.
