Hi David,
Are you back for good ? It's always great to hear from you.
First of all I have no connection with Beatnik, I just use it and think
it's the best way to sonify on the web. Ian Chia is on this list and he
might have some further thoughts and pointers for us, even if he is more
of a Director man.
As you say Flash4 with mp3 support has advanced it's support for sound
and has made possible better sonification of Flash movies. It's a bit
harder to get bloated file sizes just because you add some sound for
example.
Now let's say you want a fully sonified movie with sync'd sound events
and sound tracks you can pause, play, stop etc. Suppose you need serious
sound support, then you'll find Flash is not the tool for you.
Beatnik brings to Flash movies a full range of sonification
possibilities that can't be done in Flash even using mp3.
You need a sound track trigger events in your movie ? No problem
You need events in Flash trigger complex sound events ? No problem
You want full image / sound synch ? No problem
You need a full complement of sound events, stings and transitions with
0 cost in file size ? No problem
No problem if you use Beatnik that is.
Flash based sound inside Flash is like using bitmapped images. You are
mixing different paradigms.
So is Beatnik the ultimate answer. No but it is getting close.
As I said earlier a new player was released but I haven't managed to
install it due to some glitch that I'm trying to solve. This new player
extends the ways we can use Beatnik with Flash. If it does use DirectX
like i think it does then now you can mix both models Beatnik sound and
Flash sound under windows. A future release will, according to well
placed sources, have streaming capabilities.
For now using the FlashNik (Flash + Beatnik) model will give your movies
the extra zing it takes to transform just another Flash site into
something quite different.
FlashNik'd sites are starting to show up, Intel for example uses it very
effectivly, and as more developers start finding out all the rich
possibilities it affords more will surely pop up.
With the Music Object API Beatnik offers to developers and a free
extension for Flash you can create a Flashnik in a twinkle, and once you
get hooked you'll think all other Flash sites are a bit flat.
Nigel
