I don't know if you got a response to this or not yet that has worked, but I
always use Fireworks and save as a 32bit PNG which retains the alpha channel
and it works wonderfully. I find Fireworks to be indespensible. I usually do
most of my image creation in Painter, but then I bring it into Fireworks to
add text, effect, cut up etc. Nothing I have ever found has made tremendous
changes to production and workflow as Fireworks. It is an amazing tool. You
can also learn it in a handful of hours and know it inside out in days. So,
even if you do all your imaging in Photoshop, consider getting Fireworks for
final processing for the web.
Have a nice weekend,
Judy
