Good Morning everyone,
I am writing this letter because I know that there are a lot of people on
this list who are just getting into learning Director, so I thought I would
share some information with you. I find myself really excited these days as
I have re-evalutated my workroles, and have managed to give up a lot of my
commitments and with full time daycare starting for my daughter in two
weeks, I can finally concentrate on teaching myself Director and diving full
force into Flash, 2 things which I have been desperate to do for the past 2
years. Yippee!!
Anyhow, I set off on a search yesterday to look for a good Director book,
something that wouldn't just show me what the tools did, but give me
practical examples.
There were 9 copies of the new Director 7 Demystified, and one lonely copy
of Using Director 7, Special Edition. Looking through the two, for myself I
found the latter, to be an incredible tool to enable me to learn though a
book, how to effectively use the software. First of all, the book doesn't go
through pages and pages of ... this is how to make a vector shape, this is
how to fill it with a gradient, this is how to change the gradient ...
RRRRR, ...
Instead the author treats you as if you have a brain, with the ability to
learn quickly. He states that the book is for motivated learners. He says
that a motivated learner will be programming in Lingo in a matter of hours.
Finally, there are many chapters on the book which teach real world examples
of using the software for applications like games, simple CBT, business
apps, etc.
He goes into debugging, advanced techniques, writing good code, targeting
specific machines,
I am excited about this, and also hope that John's upcoming Flash book will
be on the same level, which I have a feeling it will be. I really feel that
too many books concern themselves with showing off other people's work and
how to draw with the tools, which for the most part is easy enough to learn.
For myself I have found the hardest thing for me is to learn good structure
with Flash.
Anyhow, the book is called
Using Driector 7 by Gary Rosenzweig ISBN 0-7897-1957-6
I also bought Lingo in a Nutshell and Director 7 in a Nutshell, both just
packed full of frill free information.
Anyhow, sorry to get so off topic, but I thought this might be useful to a
few.
Also, I purchased full spectrum tube light bulbs yesterday. If anyone finds
themselves getting tired in front of their computer, try purchasing full
spectrum lighting. They emulate noon on a bright sunny day. The light is
white, it also makes colours appear as they really are (traditional artists
use them in their studios). They are really expensive for light bulbs but
well worth it.
Have great weekend,
Judy
