I am very happy with CoolEdit2000 (www.syntrillium.com) . Very easy to use,
cheap and effective for simple and complex editing, including superior noise
cleaning tools, mp3, etc.

I agree with Wayne Pennell. Acid Pro is very easy to use, and you can =
get
some great effects from it. Plus you have way more than 4 tracks to =
use. I
dont remember the exact number of tracks, but it was at least 20. The
interface uses a friendly timeline, and you "paint" in the music by =
using a
brush tool, then dragging it as much as you want accross the timeline. =
You
can select blocks of music and paste them as much as you want, even on =
new
tracks. The only limitation is that you get 1 cd of sample wav files.. =
So
I also purchased one of the Data-Becker sound clip bundles with about =
10
CD's filled with over 10,000 sound samples from all music types. I =
also
have Adobe Premiere 5.1, which has 99 tracks for audio and video, but =
the
interface is a little harder to learn at first, and costs much more =
since it
is mainly used for video. I actually found it easier to zoom in and =
cut a
music clip at a specific sound with Acid, since Premiere relies on a
painfully difficult interface for audio scrubbing (maybe its just me).

I'm a sound-editing novice and own a copy of Cool Edit 2000, which I've
used for very basic stuff like pulling soundclips out of a file and
setting the amplitude of pieces to match each other. =20
Now I have some separate tracks of drums and synth and guitar etc that =
I
want to try mixing. I think my best options (pricewise) are the Cool
Edit Studio plug-in, which lets you mix 4 tracks (only, but it's also
only $50 more instead of $400 for Cool Edit Pro with which you can do
lots of tracks) and Acid Music 2 (again, the less expensive option). =20
Can anyone offer a recommendation for either of these or tell my why I
shouldn't get one or the other or maybe even suggest that I should
really just shell out the $400 for Cool Edit Pro or Acid Pro while I'm
at it? Since I've never done any sound editing, but think that it's
pretty much a necessity for a multimedia designer to know, I'd
appreciate any advice. (Also any pointers/URLs for learning basic
sound-editing terms like pan and volume envelopes (???) and music beds
(also ???) and so forth)
Thanks
