Hello Sharon,
My client is EXTREMELY security conscience to the point where we can be
monitored keystroke for keystroke if they choose. I work on a US Air Force
base and the website I am developing allows flash. In fact, they are so
proud of their "new found technology" that they will not unveil this project
until next year and we are not allowed to show non-essential personnel what
we are doing yet because it's a surprise. (Flash is new to them... lol).
Never once has the issue come up of Flash being unsecured. The topic has
been discussed, but nothing has been found that would make the sites
vulnerable to attacks, hacks, and such. If anyone is behind a firewall so
tight, it's me! But the public will also be allowed to view the public
portion of the site, which is also done in Flash. As for the UK, I can't
help there. I'm not allowed outside the US domains unless I want to get
suspended without pay.... NOT!
I'm guessing Flash is being viewed as no less or no more a threat than CGI,
HTML, ASP, client browsers, and such files. What keeps people out of our
servers and files has nothing to do with Flash itself. Unless I'm wrong,
Flash is just as safe as other types of files. If it were not so, then
believe me, I wouldn't be allowed to use Flash as the interface. They have
already taken away Dreamweaver because of the FTP access in it. So far,
Flash is acceptable, and definitely wanted.
I'm hoping Macromedia will comment on your question because if there really
is a security issue, my client needs to know that.
We are developing using /SQL/FLASH/VB/JavaScript and "blush" FrontPage.
However, I will die supporting UltraDev and using it instead until they lock
me up and uninstall it from my computer <g>

Subject: FLASH: Flash Corporate User Statistics
I'm a web designer at an e-business software solutions company.
Currently, we cannot use Flash technology on our site, as the security
dept will not let it through our firewall due to (supposed) security
issues. I disagree with this and I am currently writing a report
outlining why I think we should reconsider this guideline. Our website is
focused toward a corporate audience and thus, I am trying to find
statistics on what percentage of corporate web users have the flash
player, but the info on Macromedia's site is based on US statistics only.
Can anyone offer any advice regarding where I can get hold of UK
statistics?
Regards
Sharon Bennett
