You could put your buttons in movieclips, and use hittest
to see when the cursor is over a button. If you detect when
a click occurs, and you know the mouse is over a button,
then you've essentially detected a click on that button.

This is a bit of a workaround, but it should work!

with the mouse at all time. Whenever the button is pressed it causes a
ripple mask effect to go across the screen using the attachMovie method.
This needs to sit on the top most layer to cause a ripple effect on the main
movie timeline. My problem is that I also have other buttons on the screen
that activate navigation to other parts of the site and when I am using the
ripple button the other buttons do not work. I tried putting the ripple
button on a lower layer and setting a higher level for the ripple movie clip
attachment, but the ripple still runs behind the main movie. Is there a way
to work around this? Is there a way to set two button operations at the
same time?
