To flatten components of an image into one 'flatten' image you place all
the elements that you want to flatten on one layer then if they are not
symbols they are automatically flatten. For symbols use break apart and
voila they are combinable, too. To prevent further flattening (combining
with other objects) you should group or preferably symbolize your
Flattening combines layers into one layer to remove hidden UNNEEDED
detail to reduce file size. In Flash you do not have an option just to
flatten because Flash is an animation eniviroment and just flattening
layers could destroy your tweened animations (a very dangerous function
to have available).
Also, in Flash you don't neccessarily gain anything by flattening, in
fact if you combine symbols that are used in multiple instances you are
likely to create a larger file. And of course you can't flatten objects
that are used in tweens.
