FLASH: Internic? whereis

Im sorry for this completely lame question.  But wasnt there an

internic.org  at one time not too long ago?

now, internic.com takes me to Network Solutions when I submit a domain name

registration, and internic.net is the Network Solutions home page.

I know from all of the commercial TV time that Network Solutions is burning

up in my area that Network Solutions is not the internic of old, but a for

profit company.

How did this happen while I wasnt watching?

And do I have to register with Network Solutions or another domain

registration company?

Is there no 'there, there' when it comes to an organization for domain name

registration other than the ones who buy ads and TV time?

hmm

used to also be an email process with confirmation almost immediately.

now.  I have waited weeks with no confirm for the last couple of domains,

yet they show as mine in a whois.
