Wow, thanks for the (lack of) insight there Tom.

If you look at the credits, the creators of the Joan of Arc site are
credited with the inspiration. If you look at the FAQs you'll see the
unintuitive interface was intended (as in done on purpose). If you'd read
the original email you would know that the pre-load messages most likely
won't even be seen by the intended audience due to faster connections.
There's this thing called "design", and the things you mention smack of a
lack of understanding of "design" and how to apply it in different
circumstances.

Now, if you have any actual helpful thoughts (as in ones that we don't
already know about and didn't already explicitly state we knew about, or
intended, or properly credited), I'd be glad to hear them.

Site checks are intended to provide a great avenue for "beta testing" sites.
For example, "Such and such page didn't clearly show everything while in
800x600 resolution, you might want to check that". If you'd like to try
again, and provide something intelligent, please do.

Three preload messages, one shield from Joan of Arc, an unintuitive
interface
all add up to seen it, done it, been there.
