Subject: www.bthere.tv site check - thanks

Thanks to all the people who replied to the site check. Thanks more to those
who gave constructive feedback on the functionality (or lack thereof) and
aesthetics rather than the content. Brief responses:

Nadia:
Great feedback. Nicely specific and detailed. Thanks. We'll be adjusting the
log-in confirmation to reflect user's name on the site. Some of the issues
you mentioned are Mac-specific. We are re-engineering the code for better
x-platform performance. New version late next week. Hopefully most of your
issues will be resolved by then.

Daniel:
The idea of a site check is to critique functionality. Your "debate" on
content is a complete waste of bandwidth in this context. Thanks for looking
at the site.

Mike:
Thanks for the comments. We're re-checking the Flash 5 detection script.
Maybe the download was a newer version of the F5 plugin?

Jason:
Thank you too. The interface pop-up window is supposed to be fixed at
800x600, so obviously the javascript didn't work right on your PIII. We're
only using a pop-up to prevent visitors using the back/next buttons - I
understand the arguments pro/anti this technique, but ultimately it's the
client's decision. We're using UGO to host this, and the .5 MBS to the UK is
encouraging - the whole site's designed for broadband delivery and it should
be scalable to equal performance with more visitors - time will tell on this
point.

James:
I'm with you on the big background JPEGs being a bit much, but again, client
decision. I think with the proviso that we had to use 5 big JPEGs the
loading time is reasonable and there's stuff to do while we load them. Blown
up video stills is the reason for the quality of the images, and as the
entire site is built through an admin system - client puts these images in,
Generator processes them - the additional compromise is that the JPEGs are
chosen by a non-graphic design professional, and compression is
automated...all these things contribute to the current (bad) effect.
Hopefully over time the quality of the choices and source material will
improve. I suspect the images are additionally bitmapped because the 800x600
window is scaling to fill your monitor - the resize of the popup to 800x600
should help.

Paul:
"surprise, discovery, confounding expectations, dare I say, art?". Thanks
pal. Off topic but appreciated.

Tony:
apology accepted.

Tim:
see Daniel above.

Brian:
You are looking at the wrong site: the URL is bthere.tv

Frank:
When you say the site is "heavy"... what speed is your DSL
connection/location? Is (for example) heavy.com more/less useable over this
connection? If you can spare the brainpower I wouldn't mind hearing
something more specific than: "This issues this site has are functional not
cultural." Thanks for taking the time though.

I'm happy to take responses off the list, if any. We're going to be
re-engineering the javascript etc. for Macs over the next week, so if
there's more comments from Mac users, I'd appreciate them based on the site
of 2/9/01.

Thank you all for your feedback/time

-David
