Didn't this thread start when one of the web designers asked for free,
quality photos? I think the replying photographer made his point elegantly,
and now everyone seems to have jumped on him instead.
It seems to be a burning issue. I agree with Mo's point - we did all get
into it for the enjoyment and not the money. However I would also argue that
there's a limit to this enjoyment, and when it's your full time job, the
last thing you want to do is go home and do more web design - free time is
precious, and you'd end up doing nothing else.
The ideal is when, like Mo, you have your own company, and can set aside
time you'd spend working anyway to work for free on projects you believe in
- effectively paying for them with the spoils from corporate whoring. I have
a friend who's keen to try this model to develop an 'ethical' agency in the
Robin Hood mould - taking cash from the rich, bloated fat cats to support
supplying knowledge and skills to good causes.
For those of us who don't have that option available, I suggest another
approach - avoid getting into building all your friends' web sites for free
- instead help them learn how to set up their own, letting them derive their
own enjoyment from the experience. We all know the best books to read, and
the worst of the pitfalls to avoid. So they may make a bit of a hash of it
compared to a professional site... I bet everyone on this list cringes when
they think of their first web page!
Anyway, I must stop ranting and get back to whoring myself...
Have fun,
Tom xxx
