instead of saving them as swf files from Illustrator, why don't you copy and
then paste them into your flash file? Don't try to open them like a regular
file, but simply copy and paste. You have to ungroup a couple of times if
you want to be able to edit them, but I do it all the time.
that way you're only working with vectors.
