When I do it, the vectors are usually already grouped, but if I ungroup it,
it's just a regular vector graphic and then I make a symbol out of that with
my handy-dandy F8 key.
I'm not a master with Flash (yet), but couldn't you create a separate
library file with all the characters saved as symbols? You could then use it
as a linked library ( I think).
