Make a movie clip that contains nothing but the following:
frame one: stop
frame two: tell target path/to/instanceName
goto previous frame
frame three: goto and play frame 2
If you want to control the main timeline, just use "/" as the instance name.
Then control that movie clip from the appropriate frames or buttons in your
movie.
Alternately, to make your clip go backwards a certain number of frames you
could duplicate frame two of the above the appropriate number of times.
