Try this: on a higher level, create a rectangle the same size as the image.

Then create a linear gradient that goes from the background color at 100%
alpha to the background color at 0% alpha and apply it to the rectangle.
Delete the outline if there is one.

Copy the gradient-filled rectangle and use editPaste Place. Use
Modify->transform->flip horizontal, then select the arrow tool, select the
copy of the rectangle (which will be all you can see) and slide it over
until it just meets one edge of the first rectangle. If you've moved it in
the right direction, you'll now have a rectangle twice as wide as the image
that goes from transparent to background color back to transparent.
Actually it's two rectangles, but select them both, group them, and make
them a symbol (F8).

Move the whole symbol so it just touches the left edge of the image. Create
a keyframe a number of frames down the timeline. In that keyframe, move the
double-rectangle symbol so it just touches the right edge of the symbol.
Apply a motion tween to the frames in between. That should do it.
