It used to be (maybe still is) that when opening the unregistered version
you could select which two features you want to use. One of them includes
save. Make sure it is selected.

CoolEdit is a great program and I recommend you support Syntrillium with
the $50 registration fee if you possibly can. It's also a lot nicer to use
when all features are available at once.
