If you are infact trying to set up the DSN on your local machine (assuming
it is Win9.X).. here is how you do it.... it will vary slightly depending on
the type of database you are using... so I'm going to give you the
instructions for MS access...
start > settings > control panel > ODBC Sources > System DSN tab
Click the "add" button. You will now see a list of available ODBC
drivers.... Select the appropriate one...
In this case MS Access...
Once highlighted, click the "finish" button.
You will now get the configuration screen for the access ODBC connection..
type in your datasource name (can be whatever you want it to be-but remember
it... because this is how you will need to make the ASP connection).. then
type in the description for your data source... again anything you want it
to be.
Now you need to select or create the database you want to use.... if you
have an existing one, press the "select" button which will basicly allow you
to browse to the location of the database. Be sure that if it is an existing
one, that it is located outside your web... or it will not work.
Or if you need to create a new one.... press the "create" button.. this
again will allow you to browse to where you want the file to be located...
again make sure that it is outside of your web.
**Next two steps are optional**
If you want the database to be password protected, press the "advanced"
button.
If you want to modify the buffer size of time out options, press the
"options" button.
Your DSN is now created, and you should be able to call it from your ASP
script. Once you upload the flash to the server, the server will need to be
config'd to have the same DSN.
And obviously, if you use other database types like Sequel (SQL) Server,
etc, the setup will be a little different in the config screens.
If you have any questions, please feel free to mail me off list.
