I think the technique was primarily for Flash. Correct me if Im wrong.

1.make a symbol, (bar for the slider). draw a line to look like the slider slit.
on a second layer cut and paste the button up, middle and down on the slider slit.
you can use the same buttons for as many increments as neccessary for the slider
and colors. apply actions to each button to control a "tweened" transparency
of color to animated on the top layer. each color can be its own movie clip which
controlled by the button and the instance name.

then go into the buttons "properties" and delete the first frame.

If you rather keep it simple create several different buttons with the
same slider bar symbol in each "over" state and the different transparencies
in the "hit" state. keeping the slider bar hidden in all buttons except one.

HTH, it was a vague description of what exactly you were looking for.
If your not in tune with Dir however thats a larger learning curve than
Flash.
