Yes, I would like to create this in Flash only, as for the time being, it is
the one I am working on learning.

Ah yes, I had thought about doing this. I was however hoping, that I could
actually grab the slider and slide it along the path rather than having to
click as a button. That however was nothing more than wishful thinking
obviously.
apply actions to each button to control a "tweened" transparency

Yup, I got that far. Each colour has a seperate clip with 100 frames tweening
from 0 to 100%. Without a slider, I need more than one button for each colour
to define whether the button is going to go up or down the opacity scale.
I think that what I am going to try to do is create a default forward and back
set of buttons and depending on which coloured button I click on will determine
the front and back buttons. 1am, hmmmm I think I will tackle that one tomorrow
when the troops go out to play.

???? Okay, I think I am lost now.

Here is the URL for the interface I made for this. Please remember this is my
first ;-)

The large buttons on the right hand side will choose between different options
such as help, general colour theory, adding tints, toning colour, changing
background colour etc... The 12 buttons showing in the middle are the sliders
for the 12 colour families. This frame's contents will differ dependant on the
options that will be picked from the menu on the right.
Let me know what you think. I really appreciate all the help. If you have any
better ideas, I am definitely not too proud to accept them. I figured the best
way to learn this was by diving in with both feet.
Thanks for all the help. I had a feeling I should have kept my mouth shut on
the other subject.
