Hi James, hope all's going well out there.

Yes, both of the causes you identified do increase computational costs.
More calculations need to be done when there are more pixels to color, and
more alpha-blending increases each affected pixel's individual calculation
time, too.

To speed up things on a slow machine, try a smaller viewing area, and
consider simplifying the animation, particularly complex alpha-enhanced
sequences.
