Andrew,
Depends what you're trying to open, and in what program. Some programs
need 'switches' (e.g. someapp.exe /x myfile.ext) to be able to read
files correctly from the command line, and some others don't accept
command line parameters at all.
If you look at the help file, it _may_ say if you can pass files via the
command line (and any switches necessary)
You can also have a look at the properties (in Windows 9x/NT 4) of a
shortcut to a program to see if it uses switches when starting up.
For example, Netscape Communicator uses switches to open the program
'netscape.exe' in it's various operating modes
(editor/browser/newsreader etc.) Have a look at the shortcuts in the
Start menu to see what I mean.
Another way is to look at the actions that you can perform on a file:
* Open up a window in Explorer or My Computer;
* Menu: View > Folder Options;
* Select the File Types tab;
* Choose the file type you want to perform the action on;
* Click Edit;
* Select the action in the new dialog box;
* Click Edit...;
You will then see in the 'Application used...' box the command line, and
any switches, that are used by that program to open a file of that kind.
The problem with this is that you can only see this for files and
programs that are installed and registered on your system.
Hope this helps.
maz.
