My text shows up fine , now. The answer was simple, but I may have never
found it by trial and error. Thanks again!

Subject: FLASH: Freaky mask layers
The text layer must be antialiased text for the mask to work.
So, right click on the text field and choose properties. Down
at the bottom, you need to include font outlines for all the
characters you wish to appear in the text field. If you include
all font outlines, your .swf will be much bigger than if you
just include the ones you need.
