It certainly could be your laptop screen. LCD screens are generally a *fixed*
resolution, but I think some can fake other resolutions. 1024x768 is probably
your optimal resolution. Do you have the laptop set up to "scale up" lower
resolutions to fill the screen or does 800x600 have a border around the screen
image? If it's scaling up, there's definitely a loss of quality there. I could
swear my laptop offers this option, but I can't find where to change that setting
now so I can't test it.

A sure test would be to view it on a regular CRT monitor and see if there's any
difference.
