Roger,

Max is a great program with plugins that will export to flash. I
think Max's biggest flaw is its interface and workflow.. but thats my
personal opinion. Its capabilities are unsurpassed for its price
range...and what cant be accomplished with the builtin plugins... can
be bought as aftermarket plugins.

Strata is free. but they also have a full version as well. Strata
does not have flash output, but they do have a Cult3d output.. Which
is very cool. I started using Strata very early on and I am partial
to it. I love the interface and the way it works. .. it is buggy.
But the tradeoff is one of best rendering engines on the market.. I
have a very good friend who does 3d illustrations for a living who
would rather struggle with Strata's imperfections..than give up on
its beautiful rendering quality. Did I mention it is free?

My recommendation would be to download the free Strata version...see
if you like it ...and take it from there. I am not sure if Discreet
has a demo of Max... I dont think they do.
