While Pulse's player is very nice, their licensing is completly unaceptable,
IMO. I should own and be able to post content I create anywhere, anytime,
anyhow. If Pulse had aped Macromedia's successful stratedgy of selling the
authoring tools at a reasonable price and giving(!) the artist free control
of the publication of their content, they would indeed have owned the coming
web3d market, also IMO.

It may be too late now, as it appears the mothership is finally(!) making a
move in this area:

"Intel is teaming with Macromedia to deliver 3-D technologies to the
Internet. Intel's dynamic 3-D rendering engine will soon be included in
Macromedia's Shockwave Player, so you'll be able to view real-world 3-D on
the Web with a bandwidth-friendly solution."

However, I do agree that Max is the first program that various Web3d tools
create importers for, and (despite its many flaws;-) the best one to learn
to get ready for this field--assuming you have the capital to buy it and the
horsepower to run it.
