I think the paradox lies in one's defenition of the web.

Is the web an entertainment based medium like television or film.

A commercial based medium for advertising and retail purposes

or an information based medium, kinda like the evolution of the library.

The debate exists because of close minded people who believe that web is is
one and ONLY one of the above.

The great thing about the web is that people have the choice, if they want
to be entertained they will visit one site, for information another etc.

Teh problem exists when mediocre designers try to combine two things
(entertainment and information) and they fail miserably.
