I think you're hitting it right on, really. I think the net will really be a
bit (or a lot ;) *more* than tv. Not just information, not just "watch me"
entertainment, but interactive media. Sometimes I think Flash designers
(myself included) do a lot of "watch me" when they could keep the
entertainment value but allow a more truly immersive (in my sense, not
barney's sense of the word) environment by involving the user. The trick
(and not an easy one) is how to do that without either frustrating ("what am
I supposed to do now, I don't get it") or insulting with over-simplified
instructions ("yeah, yeah, click here. i get it already.") Our lives will be
easier as far as that goes when there really is a user interface that most
people on the net understand. It's just too new. (and quite often something
is deemed as "not working" too fast - they do all these studies: people
don't understand unusually colored links, can't figure out how to navigate
such-and-so kind of site etc., but what the "savvy" know now, the "general
public will soon. Got to give them a little time.) Text information has a
place, but we have an opportunity here to present information in a truly
more appealing, understandable, useable, interactive medium - the textbooks
teach the lessons ;)
