Just got back from B&N lookin' for UI design layout books. I sat down and
evaluated each of the ones I saw before choosing one. (my filtering
technique was 100% aesthetic, but my intuition usually serves me pretty good
in these matters...)
The book I decided on was "The Humane Interface" by Jef Raskin(sic). I know
the title blows goats, but the secondary title is "New Directions for
Designing Interactive Systems."
It's written by the same guy that created the Apple Macintosh project, FWIW.
Since I don't think I'm alone in needing this kind of info, I've listed some
of the chapter titles below. This book is NOT, I repeat NOT, a Flash manual
in any sense. Instead, it focuses on design theory and it's ilk. I don't
think that a definitive expert/advanced Flash book has been written yet,
anyway.
Chapters:
Cognetics and the Locus of Attention
Meanings, Modes, Monotony, and Myths
Unification
Navigation and Other Aspects of Humane Interfaces
Interface Issues Outside the User Interface
This isn't meant to be a blatant plug for the book. I'm just trying to help
out those who need it, like myself. If anyone has any other
recommendations, post 'em. One book probably won't cover everything...

Chad,
Thanks for the complement, and I'll try to help out in any way I can. I
honestly haven't found a good book on flash yet, so I look to other mediums.
I find a lot of my inspiration in film, video, etc. for Flash animation, CD
Rom and Website UI design.
In addition, I read several trade pubs, who are well known for their
excellent design, on a regular basis. In looking to these trade pubs, I look
not only at the layout of the pubs, but also the ads in these pubs.
How
Shift
Simplicity
Surface
ID
These are just a few.
HTH!
