Sure helps a lot, thanks. That is what I concluded. The client's
graphics designer, however, told me in e-mail to drag the symbol off
the library and then copy and paste it as needed, then change the
text in each one, but every time I did it they all changed.

Then I spotted that his were shown as groups in the object inspector
and the "real" instances were graphics.

But I needed to know if there was possibly something I was missing,
since instances can have different colours, rotations, scales, skew
-- who knows, maybe the text is also saved in each instance. Seems
like a legitimate possibility to someone like me learning the limits
of how it is internally stored, in a way, from the outside. (Well, I
tend to look at all programs from the standpoint of how the internal
database is formed, since I have done some degree of programming over
the past 35 years.)
