Just a few simple things to consider when using windows.

Yeah, it crashes, and seemingly for no good reason. But I have been using
win3.x, 95 and 98 for a long time with not too many inconveninces at all.
Plus I really like my right clicker . . .

This partial list came to me from a MS engineer a year or two ago. These
pointers help me quite a bit and are part of my work habits.

Important points for Windows users:
*Don't let anyone else use your computer, including, but not limited to:
your spouse, your kids, or siblings. Even your boss-if you have one.
*On start-up - Don't touch anything until the hourglass disappears and your
systray(the part where the clock is-lower right corner) completly loads.
*Look at your StartUp items and evaluate if everything in there is really
necessary to be running on start up. If not take apprpriate actions to
remove those items.
*Don't use the Active Desktop.
*Don't use the MS office tool bar.
*Don't use the auto dial-up when starting an Internet tool.
*When taking a break for an extended time, save your files and close all
applications. Windows doesn't like to sit there with apps running for long
periods of no activity and may even corrupt the app file you were working
on.
*Use a good quality UPS
*Only install programs essential to your work. Remove those that aren't.
Have another for personal stuff, games etc.
*Let windows manage your virtual memory - unless you really know what the
hell you are doing.
*Don't play music CD's in your cdrom while you are working.
*Never install AOL on your work computer.
*Don't use MS Plus.
*Use windows default desktop
*Defrag often - even if it says you don't need to.

Once your system is running well with only work essentials-Don't uninstall
apps unless there is a conflict or you are running out of hard drive space.
