You should use the Bandwidth Profiler to help determine how long your
preloader should be....but most generally you don't have to make them wait
for the entire movie to load before they can start viewing. Depends a great
deal on the way you have the navigation, I guess. If they could go
"anywhere" from the start and they might pick something that is clear at the
end, then I guess you would have to preload the entire thing.
I usually "disable" those items that are at the end of the movie until they
are actually available. For instance, I have a "gallery of pictures" on a
singles site I did. I put the movie clip that is the gallery clear at the
end of the main movie (because it is the biggest thing, I didn't want
anything else waiting for it to load). Then, if you pick the button to see
the gallery and it hasn't loaded yet, you get a "please look around at other
parts of the site while the gallery loads" instead of just a "dead button"
Hope this helps point you in the right direction. Not much action on the
list this late at night.
Oh, and I'm talking about movie clips and your question is about loading
external swf's. Hmm. I think they don't load until you tell them to, but
you can always "park them" and go ahead and load them if you want to have
them available immediately upon user's click. (meaning they have a blank
first frame with a stop action, and something will later trigger them to
play.) I wouldn't try to load them all at once, but you could start them
loading one at a time on the final frames of the movie. Then if the user
clicks on one that hasn't loaded, he will have to wait, but if he doesn't
click until they're loaded, he'll get it immediately.
Marc Hoffman always has good advice on this subject. Maybe you'll get
better results tomorrow. I think you're stuck with me tonight! he he he.
