Wow Helen, it's good to know there is actually something you can't do!

I went through that a couple of months ago but paid no mind to it because I
had made a backup of my registry(someone here helped me do that)and just
restated my BU and all was OK.

I thought is was something dumb I did when I tried to follow the removal
instructions so I didn't think to say anything.

maybe i isn't so dumb afterall?!?!

I hate messing around with windows . . . I do . . .

I know this doesn't help any . . . good luck .

OK, here's a moronic question, but if I can't do this, how can I expect
my clients to? Yesterday, I disabled the Flash activex control to test
something by following the instructions at macromedia.com (uninstall
from registry, etc). That worked fine -- it disabled. Today I went to
http://www.shockwave.com/aboutus/ready_to_play.html to reinstall it, as
directed in the mm instructions on the remove_player page. There I get
Shockwave Error:15 "The shockwave plug-in cannot be used on IE. Please
install Shockwave from www.macromedia.com" followed by "The plugin did
not initialize properly."

So I went to macromedia.com to try and get it installed again, but then
it hung on the AutoInstall page (the Step 3, when you see the Flash
player movie playing below... page) and never installed. The page where
it hangs is
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=Flash
4

I tried turning off Enable Install on Demand and running the
autoinstall, and then turning it back on and rerunning it, but it won't
install either way. WinNT, IE 5.0 -- what to do next?
