The Netscape browsers have two-way communication between applets and
scripts. The Microsoft browsers for PCs let scripts talk to applets, but
not to catch messages from applets. (The MS/Mac browsers don't let things
talk to each other.)

You should be able to achieve what you want in the Netscape browsers by
searching their docs with "LiveConnect". In the Flash Player outgoing
messages are handled by FSCommand, and incoming messages are handled by the
JavaScript API: play(), setVariable() and the rest.
