Both .BMP and .JPG bitmaps are compressed. But .JPG uses "lossy"
methods that work great sometimes, but if the bitmap has
large areas of solid colors, the .JPG format will cause really
annoying artifacts.

The nice thing is that the non-lossy methods used in .BMP .GIF,
and compressed .TIF are VERY good for solid-color images that
aren't handled well by lossy mechanisms as they "tokenize"
nicely and have very high compression levels. And since they are
NOT lossy, you never get artifacts.

So the limitations of the two formats are rather complementary,
so you can compress almost anything by choosing the format that
works the best for any particular image.

But you cannot say one is better than the other.
