Steve,
I may be totally missing your question, but thought I would throw you a
suggestion.
If the text symbol is created as a button, you can make a keyframe in the
"Hit" area of the button timeline that will define where the button is
"active."
Create a keyframe with your text in the "Hit" area. Draw a box around your
text and fill it in. The box will be completely invisible in the movie... it
only acts as a definition for the active area of the button.
