If it is jerky you are not well optimized, trying something too
complicated or running on a computer too slow (such as a 486 33Mhz.)

You must as others have stated use a MC that is external to the MC and
controlled by Button Instances(s). If you want truely smooth animation
as you go on and off the buttons then you not only need to use an
external MC for the effect but also have a series of buttons that have
the Roll Over Instance actions set to move to the correct frame based on
the current position (and direcrion) of the animation.
If you take a look at http://www.FlashTek.com/Test/DiamondColorMenu.swf
you can see that jerky action is not required but setting up a button
set like this takes planning and some work.
