how is this done, given that everything i have read says that auto
detection on 4.5 ie/mac is not possible?

It uses a combination of JavaScript and a one frame flash movie with a GET URL action. I keep waiting to hear "this doesn't work for me", please say so if it doesn't.
The old version wouldn't work for Win 98, this should.
Find an explaination of what goes on at:

Colin M explains how to do something similar and a lot easier to set up (although less transparent to the user if they don't have the plug-in) using a meta refresh tag at http://colinmoock.iceinc.com/webdesign/flash/detection/noscriptdetection.html

I was under the impression that for IE 4.5 the plug-in was already included anyway? Besides, you aren't detecting the plug-in with IE...you use ActiveX.
It wasn't untill recently that browsers started shipping with the Flash plug-in ... and we all know internet users are reluctant to update their browsers (I swear I had several hits from Netscape 1.0 the other week).
I'm a stranger to the dark world of Windows, but IE for Mac uses a plug-in and this has worked for every Windows user that has gotten back to me about it.
