I'm assuming you're looking at the .fla example, so you can see what's on
the timeline. Probably they started by writing out the whole writing
sample, and then drew the pen and motion tweened it (following a motion
guide) so it followed the writing, only in reverse. Then they added a
keyframe to the writing in frame 2 and erased a bit of the writing. Then a
keyframe in frame and erased some more. And so on. When done, they
reversed the sequence of keyframes as well as the motion of the pen.
