I have done this in the past by placing a mask (and I use that term loosely here, as officially making it a mask in Flash in not necessary) over the bitmap. I create a rectangle (or circle) that overlays the bitmap and make it with no outline and fill it with a gradient that is either white or black on both ends with the inner setting having a 0% alpha. This gives the looks you're wanting.
