thank you..... I was playing with this exact idea last night.....
haven't had a chance to get into it too deep though...

the bitmap. I create a rectangle (or circle) that overlays the bitmap and
make it with no outline and fill it with a gradient that is either white or
black on both ends with the inner setting having a 0% alpha. This gives the
looks you're wanting.
