How about this one, this may be possible:

Since we can always get the x and the y of the mouse position. Make an
animation of the object moving along the path.Put a stop in every frame of the
animation. Now, make this animation into a button. But for the HIT area, make it
the same shape as your motion path.
Now, on the mouse over, perhaps you can have an actionscript command to make
it play the next frame.
If you allow the thing to only be triggered by the mouse down to begin with.

or perhaps some other variation on this theme.
