Subject: | FLASH: Flash appropriate for school reunion site? (was:B&W Photographs and Flash) |

Thanks for the reply John,
Its refreshing to have someone from Macromedia question whether I should
even be using their product for the project. Too many times companies see
their products as the only solution to many problems, when in reality their
product isnt even the best solution for a particular situation.
In my case, I do believe Flash is the best solution for what Im needing to
accomplish. The photo fades are just one piece of the project. One
purpose of the site is to facilitate entering address data for ex-students
who are now scattered all over the country. Beyond that, however, is the
need to create a site that brings back memories and evokes an old school
spirit feeling. We want the students to remember the pleasant memories
from high school and decide to attend the all-school reunion later this
year. For people who graduated 40 years ago, a list of names might be
meaningless, where an old picture or two of someone back then might jar the
memory. Ive been pleased with Flash 4s new data entry capabilities, and
coupled with the other things Flash can help us with (playing the school
song, show pictures on cue, etc), I felt that this should be a Flash site,
possibly with an HTML alternative.
Were still in the design phase right now, so if anyone has any ideas or
suggestions, they are welcome. Ive never seen a list group with as many
creative, innovative people on it as this list has. We have tons of old
school yearbooks available, but have not honed in on a good theme for the
site. Our mascot is the owl (Hale Center Fighting Owls) and its been
difficult for me to come up with anything the owl could be doing to help
navigate the site or add interest.
Thanks again for the suggestions,
Gary (dejarnettttu [dot] edu)

* Remember, though, that fixed-resolution photographs arent
necessarily the best thing to use in
* resolution-independent interactive animations... its *possible*,
but it can often be a little like
* eating a five-pound can of beans. Is the only reason youre
looking at a Flash wrapper for the
* fade-ins? If so, and if you can ditch the fading, then HTML might
be faster to develop a
* data-driven photo gallery.
* (Rephrased, Flash can be very useful for high-impact presentations,
or for standardized interactivity
* across platforms, but if the main visual asset is just a bunch of
photographs, then the Flash wrapper
* may not be necessary.)
* Your call, though... you know the context of that project better
than we do.
